Claim: Joma Sison admits to advising Leni Robredo
Rating: FALSE
The Facts: An article posted on the Journal News Online web page claims that the founder of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), Jose Maria “Joma” Sison, admitted to advising Vice President Leni Robredo and her spokesperson Barry Gutierrez. The news allegedly came from Ang Bayan, the official publication of the CPP which was published on Monday. (https://journalnews.com.ph/joma-admits-advising-leni/)
The article was written by Lee Ann P. Ducusin, a writer who constantly publishes misleading articles on the Journal News Online webpage. (https://journalnews.com.ph/author/iapd-ducusin/)
Furthermore, this misleading article was tweeted by presidential candidate Panfilo “Ping” Lacson, who also previously tweeted about the alleged communist connections of VP Robredo (https://twitter.com/iamping…/status/1517415802550427649…)
According to similar articles by Inquirer.net, Vice President Robredo already stated that she has never been in contact with Joma Sison who is self-exiled in the Netherlands. “There is no truth to the claims that Jose Maria Sison is my personal or campaign adviser. I have never talked to him in any capacity.” (https://newsinfo.inquirer.net/…/robredo-debunks-ties…)
In an interview with PhilStar Global, Joma Sison said “I have not been advising Leni Robredo, although I think that she is a far more qualified candidate for president.”
In the same article CPP Chief Information officer Marco Valbueno debunks this information by saying that they never published such news in “Ang Bayan” and it is fake news. (https://www.philstar.com/…/sison-no-talks-all-robredo…)
Ang Bayan’s archives do not contain any article about the said news, furthermore, no articles were published on April 18, Monday for which the article claimed.
A Facebook status by Belle Enriquez, niece of Joma Sison supports these claims, saying that she believes her uncle has not been advising Robredo. She claims that this is a part of the red-tagging schemes of the Marcos trolls. She ended the post with #StopFakeNews. (https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10224906665426902&id=1023207514)
This has not been the first time that VP Leni has been falsely accused to be linked with CPP-NPA-NDF. (https://www.rappler.com/…/text-blast-joma-sison…/)
Why we fact-checked this: With 103 shares from both Facebook and Twitter, including presidential candidate Ping Lacson, this type of article contains fallacious claims that could be libelous and can be considered red-tagging.
