Claim: The Philippines is debtless since Duterte paid for it.
Rating: FALSE
False information like those claimed by YouTube vlogger ‘Mimaa’ has circulated, claiming that the Philippines has no more debt since the Duterte administration has paid for it. https://youtu.be/uWPOkjBrKs0
This is false.
The evidence that is being linked to this claim pertains to the news on how Duterte paid the P300B loan to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP). This loan only includes pandemic-related liquidity support and does not include all of the Philippines’ debt.

On the contrary, the Philippine debt actually doubled by the end of Duterte’s term. From the P5.9 trillion national debt in 2016, the Philippine national debt inflated to P12.7 trillion in 2022.

Why we fact-checked this: Claims like this provide false information which conceal the failures of the administration. We should be critical of the information that we consume, especially since we are the ones who would be paying this debt.
