A MAJORITY of COVID-19 infections in Baguio City was observed among the working age group of 20 to 49 years old, but most of the deaths occurred among senior citizens.
COVID-19 data as of Aug. 21, 2021 from the City Epidemiology Surveillance Unit (CESU) of the Health Services Office (CHSO) showed that out of the 16,578 cases, 10,272 belonged to the 20-49 years old age category.
Cases were highest among the 20-29 age group with 4,546 cases followed by the 30-39 with 3,452 and 40-49 with 2,274 cases.
There were 2,214 cases among the age group of 60-99 years old but it is in this category that the fatality rate was highest.
Records showed that the 90-99 age group registered the highest fatality rate at 21.62 percent with eight deaths out of 37 cases followed by the 80-89 group at 20.45 percent or 45 deaths out of 220 cases.
The 70-79 group was at 12.15 percent with 79 deaths out of 650 cases and the 60-69 had 6.96 percent with 91 deaths out of 1,307 cases.
The 100-109 age group registered two cases with no fatality.
The 20-29 age group had a .04 percent fatality rate with two deaths; 30-39 had .29 percent or 10 deaths; and the 40-49 had 1.5 percent or 36 deaths.
There were more male deaths at 215 out of 8,099 cases or a 2.65 percent fatality rate as against the female figures of 117 deaths out of 8,479 cases or 1.38 percent.
Since the start of the pandemic, the city government under Mayor Benjamin Magalong has been exerting efforts to protect the elderly being the most vulnerable to the disease.
Vaccination efforts were also doubled for said age group resulting in a 71.48 percent accomplishment. – Aileen Refuerzo
