THE Baguio City government is looking into the put-up of a “youth convergence center” worth some P392 million in the city.

The building is intended to be a facility for the use of the youth of Baguio City, as well as  a sports facility that can be used as a venue for local, regional, national and international sporting events alike.

According to City Administrator Bonifacio Dela Peña, P342 million of the estimated cost will be drawn from the city’s available funding, while P50 million is expected to come from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

The facility is intended to be put up at the Athletic Bowl should it come to fruition.

In order to ensure that the plans for the facility, which is set to be bidded out to contractors by mid-April, are up to standards, the city has requested the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) to be a consultant as a form of assistance.

Part of the consultation with the PSC, Dela Peña said, was to ensure that the plans are of international standards and can therefore be used as a venue for international competitions.

Aside from the center itself, the city is pursuing a P45 million expansion of the Athletic Bowl’s bleachers, which will increase both seating capacity and provide space for offices for the use of civic services.
