THE Commission on Elections (COMELEC) announced on Thursday, August 31, that it is extending the period for the filing of certificates of candidacy (COCs) in Abra Province, the National Capital Region (NCR), and Ilocos Norte.
The extension of the deadline for COC filing was brought about by Super typhoon Goring, which caused sufficiently bad weather in the three areas that shut down the appropriate offices, necessitating an extension of one day to make up for the lost time.
“Due to suspension of Government Work on account of inclement weather, the filing and reception of Certificates of Candidacy in the National Capital Region, and the Provinces of Abra and Ilocos Norte, is extended until 5 PM of September 3, 2023, Sunday,” said COMELEC Spokesperson John Rex Laudiangco.
The COMELEC started on Monday, accepting COCs for candidates seeking to run for the October 30 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE). Normally, the filing was supposed to run only until Saturday, but in the three specified areas, filing has been extended by a single day.
The COMELEC said that there are some 642,000 positions available in the BKSE and an expected two million aspirants.
