Carl Jammes Martin bucked a slow start but still managed to score a fifth-round technical knockout against Mexican Ruben Tostado Garcia in a non-title super bantamweight fight last Sunday, Dec. 8, at the Evolution Club in Tijuana, Mexico.
A stunning right left hook with 1:28 remaining in the fifth round did it all for Martin as the 30-year-old Martin could not recover, forcing the referee to stop the match.
The first two rounds saw Garcia dominating Martin as the Filipino failed to react to the combinations given by the Mexican. However, Martin got his groove in the third round when he staggered Garcia with counterpunches.
In the fourth round, Martin hit Garcia in the forehead, sensing that he could end the fight soon, the Ifugao pride went all in and finished the job in the fifth.
The win improved Martin’s record to 25-0, with 20 knockouts.
International matchmaker and Manny Pacquiao’s MP Promotions chief Sean Gibbons expressed elation for Martin’s win. He was quoted as saying that “Carl Jammes Martin started a little slow and his timing was a little off but when he got the guy with good shots, he finished his opponent really quick…”
He said that with the win, 2025 looks promising for the 25-year-old where they will look for a title fight in Las Vegas.
Gibbons also said that the win boosted Martin’s stock in the World Boxing Organization and will put him on top. Gibbons added. “He’s on track right now, and we are hoping he keeps that way.”
It was the second for Martin against a Mexican in Mexico after knocking out Anthony Jimenez Salas last September in Sinaloa.
