Fariñas has proposed an ordinance aimed at including women and children’s rights in the educational curriculum of junior high and high school students in the city in public and private schools alike.

Under the ordinance, the city’s schools would include in their curriculum the study of the following laws: Rights of a Child under Article 3 of Presidential Decree No. 603 or the “Child and Youth Welfare Code; ” Republic Act No. 7610 or the “Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act; ”Republic Act No. 9262 or the “Anti-Violence against Women and Their Children Act of 2004;” and Republic Act 9710 or the ”Magna Carta of Women.”

The ordinance also provides for the inclusion of other laws on women and children should more be passed in the future.

The ordinance would also mandate public and private schools alike to include “classroom activities” in accordance with the inclusion of women and children’s rights

Following its approval on first reading, the proposed ordinance was referred to the Sanggunian’s Committee on Education, Culture, and Historical Research for further study.
