A new ordinance approved by the Baguio City Council is set to increase the annual subsidies for each barangay in the city, due for signing by Mayor Benjamin Magalong.
The ordinance would double the annual subsidy from P30,000 to P60,000, which would allow for barangay local governments to cover more essential expenses.
The increase in the funding is intended to support various barangay-level programs and initiatives such as tourism development; disaster risk reduction; sports development (supporting youth and community sports activities); welfare programs that address the needs of senior citizens, youth, and persons with disabilities (PWDs); peace and order, which involves maintaining the barangay tanods and the Barangay for Peace and Order Advisory Council (BPOAC); assistance for vulnerable groups and economic and social welfare reforms that promote programs aimed at improving economic conditions and social services within each barangay, thus enhancing the living standards of constituents.
The P60,000 subsidy will be appropriated annually from the city’s general fund to ensure a steady and reliable source of support for barangay activities.
