Cher, one of the rare artists going by a single name, has a Twitter account with almost 4 million followers.
Last week, she set the Twitterverse afire with her Valentine’s Day tweet (2 am of February 15 in the Philippines): “IF YOU WANT IT DONE RIGHT….LET A WOMAN DO IT.”
There were 11.9 retweets, 1.571 quote tweets and 60.9 likes.
She didn’t give background about her tweet but apparently she was watching the half-time show of the National Football League Superbowl and was most probably referring to her good friend Mary J. Blige, the only female among the all-star cast in the halftime show.
But people have other interpretations.
This is one of her most popular tweets at that moment. We counted the popular reply tweets in her wall and counted 205.
Most were congratulating her about the power of women. Only a few referenced about Mary J. Blige. Some thought it was about the Valentines, a new song of Cher and situation of women in Brazil and Turkey.
Remarkably, 34 thought it was about VP Leni Robredo. Not all were positive as four were negative about Robredo.
“I agree except when it comes to our VP,” one said.
Another said, “pati international celebrity dinidiktahan na.”
Another used a weird hashtag, “#BuangSonny” referring to Cher’s long-dead partner Sonny Bono.
Cher only replied once — to a gay couple — and said: “BRAVO‼️KEEP DOIN WHAT YOU’VE BEEN DOING.”
Probably overwhelmed, Cher later tweeted: “Will have to come back. Got rough headache, But When I Eat It Should Go Away”
It was when she came back after dinner, when Cher defended U.S. President Joe Biden in a single tweet before tweeting: “Excuse Don’t Know Leni.”
It was retweeted 9,337 times and liked 60,300 times. Also 1,794 commented, now mostly Filipinos. Some introduced VP Robredo to her while some in the opposite side vilified her to Cher.
She was caught in the political wrangling between the anti- and pro-Leni groups but came out with this: “BRAVO‼️LET WOMEN DO IT‼️LET LENI,& ALL
WOMEN FIGHTING 2 SAVE CLIMATE,CHILDREN, ELDERLY,POOR,HOMELESS,SICK,PPL OF ALL COLORS,ETHNICITIES, LGBTQ.FORCE HONOR IN GOV.MAKE MEDICAL CARE,EDUCATION,
CHILDCARE FREE. TAX CORPORATION,STOP CHILD LABOR.ANIMAL CRUELTY,ETC.
#2GETHERWERSTRONG” after realizing who Robredo was. (https://twitter.com/cher/status/1493851972755021824?s=21)
Again she was dragged in the fight (1,794 replies!) already beyond her control, that her next tweet was a call for a truce:
“I DONT KNOW EVERYTHING,EVERYONE,
CUT ME SOME SLACK,…
I WORK HOURS EVERYDAY
SOMETIMES TALKING TO
SEVERAL CONTINENTS AT ONCE TRYING TO HELP,
MAKE CHANGES.BYE.”
This, thankfully, is her last tweet on the matter and she had since moved on with the birthday of her son and the plight of an orca and others like her.
Philippine newspapers and media outfits, however, wrote about the incident and using the “Bravo” tweet as the main quote.
Those in the opposite side used the “Excuse Don’t Know Leni” as their profile pics.
That it was among her few tweets not in all-caps showed that it was a sorry gesture.
But as one Twitter user said, “Let’s not drag Cher into this.”
