Claim: The Carmelite nuns of Jaro, Iloilo eagerly watched “Maid in Malacanang”

The Facts: The Facebook page “Vincentiments”, which is the studio of film director Darryl Yap, claimed in a post that Carmelite nuns of Jaro, Iloilo watched his movie “Maid in Malacanang.” In the post, he thanks the nuns for watching the film. Yap claims that the two nuns wearing brown in the photo are Carmelite nuns.
“Maraming Salamat sa CARMELITE SISTERS from JARO,ILOILO— sa panonood ng #MAIDinMALACAÑANG, hindi apektado dahil malinis ang kanilang konsensya at nakakaunawa ng balangkas ng pelikula.”
The Iloilo Metropolitan Times, a newspaper in Iloilo City, disproved Darryl Yap’s claim on 5 August 2022. The paper stated that the nuns wearing brown in Yap’s post are from the Missionaries of St. Therese of the Child Jesus Convent in Pavia, Iloilo.
The publication also pointed out that the Carmelite nuns are cloistered. This means that they do not leave the monastery unless it is absolutely necessary, and that they only speak when it is essential to do so.
The Facebook user “Carmelites Jaro” also clarified in a post that the nuns in the said post are not Carmelite Sisters and that they “ do not support any distortion of Truths, fake news and people who are using us for their own gain.”
Article 182 of the Constitution of Discalced Carmelites states that only extern sisters and the prioress, who is the superior of the monastery, are allowed to leave the monastery for necessary
“external requirements of the monastery” such as paying bills, buying groceries and supplies, and other tasks.
