The Claim: Leni Robredo did not mention the title of her favorite book in the Rappler interview
Rating: FALSE
The Facts: Leni Robredo did indeed mention that her favorite book is Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird (1960).
In the video posted by Rappler, at the timestamp 4:22, VP Leni states the title “To Kill a Mockingbird” which she read during her first year of high school.
Twitter user Dimple (@sultress2022) claims that VP Leni did not answer the question about her favorite book correctly, stating that she only described her favorite book and failed to be concise with her answer. The tweet has since garnered 405 likes and over 1,300 retweets as of writing.
Meanwhile Facebook user @Jean whose post reached 1.7K likes and 3.4K shares states that the VP was “still in a limbo” as she was beating around the bush. However, at the 00:23 time stamp on the vid shared by the two users, VP Leni has already answered the question and simply elaborated on why this was her favorite book.
Harper Lee’s novel won the Pulitzer Prize in 1961, which was later adapted into a film in 1962, directed by Robert Mulligan, starring Gregory Peck and Mary Badham (https://www.goodreads.com/…/2657.To_Kill_a_Mockingbird). Peck won an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role as Atticus Finch in 1963 (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000060/awards).
To Kill A Mockingbird was also adapted for the stage by Aaron Sorkin, which opened on Broadway in December 2018. Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird (1960) is considered one of the most iconic literary works in modern American literature. It is widely read as part of high school and/or college curricula.
The reason we needed to fact-check this was because netizens who have since interacted with the post have repeatedly berated the presidential candidate even though she was able to answer the question in detail. (https://www.philstar.com/…/lenny-robredo-inspired…)
