Claim: 2023 is a year of bad karma, according to psychic Rudy Baldwin
Rating: FALSE
New Year predictions are newspaper fodder and should be taken with a grain of Himalayan salt.
Filipino psychic Rudy Baldwin gave her positive and negative predictions for this year on her YouTube channel.
The 28-minute video highlights what Baldwin calls the “Year of Bad Karma”. The video has garnered 1.4M views and 7.7 thousand comments as of writing.
Baldwin claims the following could happen this year:
Crime will be more prevalent
“Mostly nangyayari po ito sa mga taong may mataas na posisyon katulad po ng mga taong nagtatrabaho sa batas… pangalawa ang politiko, pangatlo ang mga taong nagtatrabaho sa kapulisan (Mostly it will happen to those in high positions like those in the law and justice departments, those in politics and thirs among the police).” She also claimed that a tragedy will happen to students akin to the Thailand daycare massacre that happened in October of 2022.
Natural disasters
“Mga ilang lugar sa Pilipinas pag nakaranas ng lindol, masasabi nila sa sarili nila in the first time of the history, first time nangyayari merong ganitong kalakas na lindol (There are some places in the Philippines that will experience really strong earthquakes for the first time).”
She also claims that this year we will experience the effects of climate change as the country is likely to experience “extreme drought”.
Unless Baldwin has a degree in tectonics, geology or disaster studies, her prediction would just be considered ragings of a modern-day Cassandra.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has also frequently informed the public that no device can predict when and where an earthquake would occur exists.
Why we fact-checked this: It is easy for people to believe in these readings especially when the psychic prediction is worded in a very general manner. However, there is no scientific proof that these natural disasters, social injustices, and other environmental calamities can be prophesied. It becomes easier for people to spread disinformation and conspiracy theories, and excuse any kind of injustice and maladministration if they believe that these predictions are bound to happen anyway.
