Powerhouses La Trinidad and Itogon are leading the Cong. Eric Go Yap Congressional Cup Benguet Basketball League, both with 2-0 win-loss records after the first week of competition. Meanwhile, Kabayan is set to join the women’s volleyball competition after initially announcing they would not field a team.
La Trinidad had a shaky start, narrowly escaping Kabayan, 66-65. However, the team found its rhythm when it routed Sablan, handing Tublay a 91-53 defeat—the most lopsided victory in the seven-day-old tournament backed by the office of Cong. Yap and the ACT-CIS Partylist.
Itogon joined the defending champions at the top of the leaderboard with an identical 2-0 slate. Itogon played a dominant game against Mankayan, winning 98-90 last Saturday, followed by a solid 68-52 victory in Mankayan’s home court last Tuesday.
Last year’s runner-up, Bokod, kicked off the league with a close 68-63 win over Tuba in its only appearance so far. Tuba, however, bounced back last Wednesday at the Benguet Sports Complex, easily defeating Buguias, 80-59, bringing their record to 1-1.
Kapangan made its debut last Wednesday, with an 86-76 win over Kibungan, dropping Kibungan to a 1-1 record, tied with Tuba, Tublay, and Bakun. Tublay secured a win over Atok on Thursday at home, while Bakun triumphed over Sablan the same day.
Tublay will face powerhouse Tuba this Saturday at the Benguet Sports Complex. Other matchups include Kibungan versus Itogon at 9 a.m., La Trinidad against Buguias at noon, Mankayan facing Bokod at 1:30 p.m., and Kapangan taking on Kabayan at 3 p.m.
In the women’s volleyball division, powerhouses Itogon, Kapangan, Tuba, Sablan, and La Trinidad all won their opening matches last Sunday, each in three sets, in the Yap Cup’s Benguet Volleyball League.
This Sunday, Sablan will open the five-game volleyball schedule with a match against Bakun at 9 a.m., followed by Itogon versus Kibungan. At noon, Kapangan will take on a strengthened Tublay squad, followed by Mankayan and Bokod vying for their first win. The day’s matches will close with La Trinidad facing Buguias.
In a recent development, Kabayan announced they would participate in the volleyball league after initially deciding not to field a team. Currently, 12 teams are slated to compete.
