The Baguio Tourism Council (BTC), led by chairperson Gladys Vergara, is advocating for a barangay-level composting initiative.

Vergara said the project, called the “Greensoil Venture” initiative, aims to provide Filipino households with a practical solution for turning organic waste into valuable compost fertilizer, while also creating livelihood opportunities for local communities.

“This eco-friendly initiative empowers households to transform biodegradable waste into high-quality organic fertilizer, turning everyday waste into a valuable resource,” she said.

Vergara explained that the initiative is not only focused on reducing waste but also on providing livelihood opportunities by enabling households in barangays to produce fertilizer that can be sold for income.

Currently, a composting facility is already in operation at the former Irisan village dumpsite. The local government recently introduced black soldier flies (BSF) to speed up the decomposition process and convert biodegradable waste into compost.

The larvae of the BSF can consume up to 20 kilos of food waste per day, transforming organic matter into nutrient-rich soil fertilizer. The resulting compost is being used in parks managed by the City Environment and Parks Management Office (CEPMO).
