LAWMAKERS in Baguio have given their support for the conduct of a “healthy” food festival at the end of November as part of the National Environmental Awareness Month.

The resolution, authored by Councilor Betty Lourdes F. Tabanda said that the Salun-at Food Festival can be used as a vessel to showcase the value of natural resources that environmental balance and care can bring about by putting high-quality food made with natural products.

The Salun-at Wellness Festival and Blue Zones Wellness and Longevity Movement will hold the Salun-at Food Festival from November 2 to 26, 2023 simultaneously at Malcolm Square and Igorot Garden with the theme ‘Healthy Food and a Healthy Life for a Healthy Environment.’

The event advocates healthy food choices for healthy and productive communities leading to a healthier environment.

According to the council, the Salun-at Food Festival will feature food stalls for a variety of plant-based cooked food, Baguio fruits and vegetables, as well as cooking demos.

Another activity planned for the conduct of the month in accordance with Republic Act 9512, otherwise known as the National Environmental Awareness and Education Act of 2008, is a lecture-workshop at the YMCA building to educate locals on the benefits of plant-based food for preventing diseases, improving health and wellness, and the interplay of a plant-based diet with the health of ecosystem and the environment.

As stipulated in RA 9512, every November shall be known as the Environmental Awareness Month throughout the country.

While RA 9512 does not stipulate any specific conduct of events in any local government, it tasks the government on every level to promote environmental awareness through environmental education. It defines the policy of the State to the right of the people to a balanced and healthy environment.
