BAGUIO City has launched its 2023 10-day Basa Baguio Reading Camp on Monday, which aims to aid Baguio school children improve their reading skills in a response to the perceived low reading skill of the city’s young learners.

The camp will  last from Monday to the end of the month in the city’s 33 public elementary schools. The 112 volunteers from all sectors have been trained and are to facilitate fun reading activities for the 687 Reading Campers.

This reading camp is a joint effort by the local government of Baguio led by Local School Board Chairman, Mayor Benjamin Magalong, the Department of Education (Division of Baguio), Synergeia Foundation, the Rotary Club of Makati (Paseo de Roxas), and the Rotary Club of Baguio (Highlands).

According to  Mayor Magalong, the city previously held an Education Summit with education stakeholders for an identification of the city’s education situation and problems.

Said convention came up with the potential solution of conducting a city-wide camp for elementary and younger students focusing on developing reading skills.

In order to carry out the planned camp, the city also conducted a volunteer training workshop in May, in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Synergeia Foundation.

The workshop focused on equipping the volunteers with the appropriate skills to teach the learners reading skills during the camp.

Magalong also said that the first batch of volunteers educated by the DepEd will be assigned to mentorship duties to train more volunteers for continued conduct of the camps.
