Dung traders in La Trinidad told to lobby for regulation after closures

CHICKEN dung traders are looking to legitimize their operations in La Trinidad after the closure of 10 dung production sites in the municipality last week.

According to  Victor Singa Jr., La Trinidad municipal legal officer, dung producers are allowed to seek assistance and redress from the municipal council and lobby for regulation rather than outright closure as chicken dung is not considered contraband despite the closures brought about by complaints from residents about the stench coming from the sites.

Chicken dung production is currently disallowed in the town based on Administrative Order 008-2010, and because there is currently no existing regulatory ordinance, according to Singa.

The barangay authorities of Shilan village in La Trinidad, where the 10 dung production sites were located, had passed a local ordinance to regulate the trade of dung which is a major income producer in the area, but the municipal council struck it down, citing the AO.

Without a regulatory ordinance, the town must continue to close down all found dung production facilities, leaving the dung producers waiting for the crafting of such an ordinance.
