According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the earthquake was felt at Intensity V or strong in Pilar and Lacub in Abra; Intensity IV or moderately strong in Banayoyo, Ilocos Sur and Licuan-Baay, Abra; and Intensity III or weak in Nueva Era, Ilocos Norte and San Fernando City, La Union.

The quake was also recorded at Intensity II in Baguio City and La Trinidad, Benguet, and Intensity I in Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte and Itogon, Benguet.

The Phivolcs said that the earthquake that struck was tectonic in nature, meaning it was caused by the movement of an active fault line near the area.
