THE Baguio City Council has expressed support for the proposed construction of a bypass road connecting the city and the municipality of La Trinidad along the Balili River.

The planned road was initially proposed and ratified in a resolution by the La Trinidad Council in 2020. The resolution requested former president Rodrigo Duterte to allocate some P5 billion worth of funds for the construction of the river.

La Trinidad’s council cited a study from the National Economic and Development Authority- Cordillera Administrative Region (NEDA-CAR) proposing a monorail atop the national highway or the Balili River bypass to help with the growing traffic problem, as well as a feasibility study conducted by the School of Engineering and Architecture of Saint Louis University as per its agreement with the Municipality of La Trinidad. The feasibility study proposed an estimated cost of P5 billion for the implementation of the project.

In a letter dated August 22 of this year, Benjie Evan, Administrative and Operation Officer of the Association of Municipal Mayors and Barangay Captains of the Philippines, Inc., requested for the issuance of a manifestation of support for the implementation of the proposed construction of the said bypass through a council resolution addressed to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

In response, the Baguio City Council, through a resolution authored by Councilors Mylen Victoria Yaranon, Leandro Yangot Jr., and Fred Bagbagen endorsed and supported the proposal of La Trinidad.

The resolution is now awaiting a signature from Baguio Mayor Benjamin Magalong before its submission to concerned agencies and offices.
