THE number of incidents of fire in Baguio City has increased from previous figures in the same period of April to August last year, according to the Baguio Fire Department.

From April to August of last year, there were 13 recorded fire incidents, which increased to 15 incidents in the same period this year.

Baguio City Marshal Fire Superintendent Nestor Gorio stated that arson investigations on these incidents showed that the major causes of fire incidents in the city are due to unattended cooking, overheated home appliances and overloading of electrical wiring among others.

As part of the drive to prevent fire incidence in the city, Gorio said that more establishments have been inspected for adherence to fire safety standards in the same period compared to last year.

According to Gorio, from January until August, some 3,007 establishments in the city were inspected and issued fire safety inspection certificates compared to 2,487 inspected and certified establishments in the same period last year.

He also said that the Baguio Fire Department responded to fewer emergency calls in the same period, from 189 last year to only 166 this year.

Gorio encouraged the public to take part in the Baguio Fire Department’s (BFD) fire safety campaign to prevent the occurrence of fire incidents.
