Claim: BBM beats Leni in 7-Eleven Speak Cup “Survey”
Rating: FALSE
According to a post which we found through our tipline, former Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. won the contest with a lead of almost one million cups converted into votes.
It’s not a survey or election because a voter or coffee/Gulp drinker can have unlimited votes for the preferred candidate. The daily trend also would show that the Robredo “votes” are consistent while the Marcos’s votes have been steadily shrinking.
The Facts: The 7-Eleven convenience chain store launched its 7-Election 2022 “Speak Cup” event starting from March 9 to April 27. It has been extended to May 4.
People can unofficially vote for the five leading presidentiable candidates by purchasing drinking cups in which the five presidentiables are printed. The candidates to choose from are Senator Ping Lacson, Ex- Senator BongBong Marcos, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, Senator Manny Pacquiao, and Vice President Leni Robredo. There is also an ‘Undecided’ cup for those who are undecided.

According to their website, Marcos did take the lead with 2,070,867 cups sold; followed by Robredo with 1,146,722; Moreno with 387,232; Pacquiao 249,510; and lastly, Lacson with 227,448 cups sold.

As of May 4 in their official data, Marcos got 43%, compared to Robredo with 24%, Moreno with 8%, Pacquiao with 6%, and Lacson with 5%. Undecided got 14%. So even with the undecided going for Robredo, Marcos will still win. (https://7-election.com.ph/results/detailed-data)
It has been said that Duterte won in the 2016 version, as well as Trump and Biden in the US.
Is this an indication that Bongbong Marcos will win the May 9 elections? Maybe he will if a voter would get to drink with the preferred presidential cup only once. But there is no limit to how many 7-11 drinks a supposed voter could buy in this promo.
A better indication would be the daily votes per day as seen in breakdown which shows that the votes are almost even for Marcos and Robredo on May 3. (https://7-election.com.ph/results/)
The graph would show that Robredo’s Speak Cup votes were even from March till May. It would appear that Marcoses’ coffee votes dwindled as the days before the election got nearer.
Of course, 7-Eleven also put a disclaimer saying that this survey is unscientific and unofficial which was only done in the spirit of fun and promoting sales. “Without additional questions and without restrictions as to the age of the customer and frequency of purchase and hence, may not be considered to reflect any sentiments regarding any official survey or any upcoming elections.”
Why we fact-checked this: We need to be critical of the facts that we consume. Surveys such as these should be taken with a grain of salt as it does not reflect the overall state of the Philippine election.
