Claim: Bongbong Marcos is an economist
A primer on the candidates attending the SMNI Presidential Debates calls presidential candidate Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. a politician and an economist.
Rating: FALSE
The video introducing SMNI’s presidential debate participants briefly claims Marcos is a politician and an economist (seen at the 54:53 mark of this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_hYaWitH0w).
Marcos does not have a background in economics.
Marcos has attempted in the year 1975 to apply for and pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) education in Oxford University. Oxford accepted Marcos but did not allow a specialization in either engineering or economics.
Documents from then charge d’affaires Ambassador Pablo Araque in 1976 report that Marcos Jr. passed only the philosophy portion of the PPE exam, failing both the politics and economics portions.
Marcos, having failed to achieve a Bachelor of Arts in the PPE track, instead pursued a special degree in Social Studies, which Oxford University says ” is not a degree, and neither is it comparable, superior nor equivalent to one. A special diploma is not a course of higher education leading to an undergraduate or first degree or even a master’s degree.”
Marcos also admits to not finishing his master’s degree pursuits at the Wharton Business School in the University of Pennsylvania.
Given that Marcos has not succeeded and failed to qualify in his attempts to pursue higher education in economics, it would be a false claim to call him an economist.
