BAGUIO Mayor Benjamin Magalong did not grant his stamp of approval to the resolution urging the city’s various department stores and markets to remove sweets from their checkout counters.

The resolution, penned by Councilor Philian Weygan-Allan, originally sought to get sweets and other similar products out of checkout counters in the city’s various business establishments in a bid to prevent the occurrence of child tantrums in said establishments.

However, the resolution remains unsigned and has been returned to the council by Magalong, who said that he disagrees with the logic behind it.

“The matter of managing a child’s tantrums rests more on behavioral practices that should start at home, and within the family – otherwise, tantrums and other fits can be had anywhere or at any other time, not just while waiting near checkout counters,” Magalong said.

He also said that the resolution fails to take into account other establishments that children have access to such as local sari-sari stores.

Magalong also added that the resolution is moot as, to begin with, children currently are not allowed in said business establishments in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Allan meanwhile defended the resolution, citing research that claims two-thirds of all sweets purchases are on impulse after seeing the products in the checkout counters and saying that the relocation of said sweets both lessens the chance of undesirable behavior and causes no loss to the establishments in question.
