Anti-smoking drive yields P1.7m in fines

THE city’s ongoing enforcement of the existing anti-smoking ordinance has yielded some P1.7 million worth of fines in the first half of the year.

The community anti-smoking task force of the city has over the course of the first half of the year from January to June apprehended nine individuals for violations, and has cited 68 establishments out of a total of 710 inspected throughout the period.

Meanwhile, the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) and Public Order and Safety Division (POSD) have inspected another 790 establishments, for a total of 1,500 inspected throughout the same period.

BCPO and POSD have together apprehended 239 individuals and cited 608 violator establishments in the time period.

From the enforcement of the anti-smoking ordinance, the City Treasury Office (CTO) was able to collect P1.1 million worth of fines, while the POSD collected P630,000, and the BCPO collected some P12,000 worth of fines.

The number of violators cited this year has decreased sharply compared to previous years.

2019 saw 1,505 violators and 4,465 in 2020, but in the current year, only 307 violators have been apprehended.
