THE deputy fiscal of Ilagan City and rising political star in Apayao was shot dead near his house in Conner, Apayao.

Atty. Victor Begtang Jr. was shot dead in Malama, Conner, Apayao at about two o’clock in the afternoon of June 23.

Begtang is said to be the brother of Apayao Gov. Eleanor Bulut-Begtang.

According to Conner OIC Police Chief P2Lt. Caroline Domyong, they were able to recover four slugs from the body of Begtang. He was reportedly repairing a truck in his car repair shop when the gunmen riding in tandem shot him.

Domyong said that Begtang was with two of his repairmen. They were having coffee when the assailants arrived about 50 meters away.

Begtang told his companions to scamper but he himself was met by the other assailant and was cornered. He was then shot several times.

The assailants were said to be riding an XRM motorcycle.

He was brought to the Conner District Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Begtang was said to be the legal adviser of a faction of the Hugpong Party and reportedly said that he will be running for Congress to represent Apayao in 2022.
