BAGUIO City has just launched its artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted Health Information Assistant and Vaccine Management System, also known as the “telemedicine” system.

The system employs AI in a digital platform, accessible through the Baguio government website, allowing for free online medical consultations and medical queries.

Members of the medical community, representatives from the Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) communications, Mayor Benjamin Magalong, and Department of Health Cordillera Assistant Regional Director Amelita Pangilinan launched the telemedicine system on Thursday.

According to  Dr. Ruel Revilla, the telemedicine system’s overseer, the pandemic has brought about innovations in the way contactless or distance medical care is handled.

Revilla added that the telemedicine system provides a sense of privacy to the consultation, which may encourage patients to seek professional help,  who otherwise due to fear of social stigma because of a disease, would refuse to do so.

The system primarily functions by connecting patients doing distance consulting to medical professionals who are involved in the telemedicine system through voice boxes, e-mails, or even live online consultation.

Patients may also be referred to medical practitioners, a nearby health facility or a hospital for immediate care.
