A DECOMMISSIONED Irisan garbage dump will be fully converted to an eco-park soon.

This was announced by Eugene Buyucan, head of the General Services Office, (GSO).

Buyucan said that efforts are ongoing to convert the decommissioned dump into an eco-park, expected to be converted “within a few months,” with the P17 million project having 175 more calendar days to expected completion.

He also added that cleanup efforts are underway to remove the mixed biodegradables, recyclables, and residual garbage in the area as part of the conversion process, with some recyclables making their way into the final eco-park design.

Among efforts undertaken to convert the dump into an eco-park is the recycling of garbage for use as planting materials in the site.

Roads and walkways have been paved in the area as well, with walls put up in the area, as well as parking spaces, greenery on terraces, and huts for shade for potential eco-park visitors in the future.

Buyucan also said that a tank intended for the prevention of residual contaminants leaking into the underground water table beneath the park has been put in place.

Agricultural lime has also been used to eliminate the remaining stench in the site post-cleanup, which has been ongoing since July of 2019.

Biodegradable waste meanwhile is still being processed in the area’s Environmental Recycling System (ERS), which converts the biodegradables into compost or fertilizer for the city’s farmers to avail of.

The dumpsite was previously decommissioned in 2011 following a typhoon causing garbage slides in the area, killing five people and damaging three houses..
