THE conversion of the city’s old dumpsite at Irisan barangay into an ecological park is underway.

The City Engineering Office, under City Engineer Edgar Victorio Olpindo, said the first phase of the project is now 60.22 percent complete.

Engr. Richard Lardizabal said phase 1 of the project covers the planting of bermuda grass and flowers, construction of pathways or walkways, and fabrication of bamboo nipa huts.

It will also include the construction of softscapes (greenery and flower gardens), slope protection by planting vetiver grass, dap-ays, methane gas exhaust holes, vertical garden, and the geotextile surface treatment.

The project costs P17.2 million sourced from the 2011 and 2014 Local Development Fund.  Its target date of completion is on December 26, 2020.

The scope of work for phase 2 will cover a solar-powered system for the walkways, nursery, cactus garden, additional dap-ays, comfort rooms, galleries, and other gardens with an estimated project cost of P25 million.

The CEO is currently coordinating with the City Environment and Parks Management Office, City Planning and Development Office, General Services Office, and others for additional inputs and other recommendations to further improve the park.

The conversion of a portion of the 52-hectare facility was programmed according to the commitment of the city to the National Solid Waste Commission (NSWMC). – APR
